This is a photo given to me by Hj Mohd Amin. These are the few Malaysians at Port Sudan during recent 1429 Hijrah Eid Adha celebration. As usual, Hj Mohd Amin and few friends will travel by road from Khartoum to Port Sudan (approximately 1000 km) to celebrate Eid with the small Malaysian community at Bashayer Marine Terminal. At the same time, they will spend some time snorkeling and fishing at the Red Sea Resort. This event reminds me of the past!

I believe this is the first trip of Hj Abdul Rahim Wahab to PS.

I miss the cool and dry December weather at Port Sudan. I am too wet here!!! The sea waves at South China Sea is much larger that the Red Sea!!! Not a good time for fishing or swimming.

The city is famous with "asam pedas" and "ikan bakar". I have tried "paper tosai" at the Nasi Kandar Pinang Besar near Cheng. In my opinion, the competitive mamak food business in Klang Valley can't be challenged.

Approximately at 8:30 am, after catching many fishes at the coral patch, the hot air from inland started blowing towards the sea and brought suspended sand and dust (sand storm). The hot wind gust developed choppy sea waves and created unpleasant fishing environment. Therefore, the team decided to pack things up and departed to the floating hotel. Fishing continued with few catches and we adjourned for briyani lunch at 12 noon. Immediately after lunch, we moved back to shore for Friday prayer.

The fishing team went back to the coral patch in the early morning of Friday 8-08-08 to continue with the fishing rally. The weather was very pleasant and the sea was seen flat. The seawater was crystal clear and we were able to see several meters below the surface. In actual fact, the Red Sea was experiencing the lowest tide of the year. We were blessed by Allah to see His wonderful creation of moon shape white coral. It was our first encounter of such beautiful coral.

BUILD TO BE TOUGH

On Friday night 7th August 2008, the fishing team stopped by the coral patch approximately 700m from the shore on the voyage to the floating hotel. We left the jetty at 6:45 pm and reached the location approximately 7:00 pm. Therefore, we had to conduct the maghrib prayer on the boat. Everybody was given a bottle of mineral water for ablution. Tuan Harmadi had his first catch (junior barracuda) after the prayer. Approximately at 8:30 pm, the wind from the East started to blow inland and created unpleasant waves. Two of the members had minor sea sick and we had to call off the fishing because of the rough sea and continue the journey to the floating hotel. The fishing rally continued at the hotel.

Remember Albert Einstein said: A ship is always safe at the shore but it is NOT what it is built for.

SATELLITE DISC AGENT

This is one of the activities the PECD Construction Manager does during his free time. Fixing and maintaining the satellite disc. I believe this is the only technology transfer he gets from Sudan. How many channel you want, brother? 500 or 1000? I don't think he does the work to earn his living at the desert community.

He may want to enter into satellite TV business at Sabah and Sarawak after retiring from this project. No need big capital, used "kuali" will do!!! Make sure you prepare a manual on how to fabricate, install and commision a satellite disc before you leave the country....

The only two remaining PECD personnel at site are expressing their gratitude to the beloved country by installing the national flag at the construction camp in anticipation of the coming national day on August 31, 2008. The ongoing financial turbulance facing the employer does not deter them from being firm at this land of uncertainties and facing the negative consequences. May Allah bless them with patience.

This photo was recorded on the 18th July when Hamizan catched a big "Siti Nurhaliza" fish. He was declared fisherman of the week at that particular weekend. It took us two days to finish the steam fish. He didn't manage to defend the title on 25th July and 1st August, 08.

We went to the coral patch opposite the grounded cruise ship. It was a pleasant summer morning and the temperature was bearable with slight cool breeze moving from the land to the east. Everybody was so excited to be at the location after missing many earlier opportunities.

It was a challenging day for some except for Tuan Harmadi that easily brought back a full sack of fishes. For some, the fishing hooks may have snapped because the smart hammour tried to make an escape by hiding under sharp coral edges. Sometimes, the barracudas made an easy escape by cutting the fishing line using their sharp teeth. Anyhow, the trip was considered the most exciting fishing trip so far.

Look at Tuan Daing in the attached photo. He lost several catches because of the challenges mention above but managed to get a fish at the last hour of the tour. Alhamdulillah. Allah Karim.

CNPC to focus on Sudan

China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) plans to set up two independent
units to spearhead investment in oil and gas exploration and development in
Sudan and South America.
Company officials said Sudan and South America are emerging areas that are
poised to contribute the bulk of CNPC's overseas production in the future.
The company plans to separate its operations in Sudan and Venezuela from
those in the rest of the world because they are politically sensitive areas
where foreign investment has drawn international criticism.
Currently, the E&P investment in the two areas comes under the jurisdiction
of CNPC's overseas outfit China National Oil & Gas Exploration & Development
Corporation.
CNPC hopes the new structure will help ease the international row over its
E&P involvement in Sudan.
The company hopes to produce 600,000 barrels per day of crude from Sudan by
2010, despite the fact that it has reduced activities in Sudan's Darfur
region due to unrest.
It is now operating at Sudan's blocks 1, 2, 6, 3/7, 12/4, 13 and 15. The
latest addition is the 20-year production sharing contract for Block 13 that
covers 38,200 square kilometres, stretching from Sudan's north-east coast to
the Red Sea.
CNPC has a 40% interest in the project, with the rest split between
Indonesian state-owned oil company Pertamina, Sudanese state oil company
Sudapet, Sudan's Dindir Petroleum International and Nigeria's Express
Petroleum & Gas and Africa Energy.
The South American unit will look after E&P in Peru and Venezuela. The
latter is increasingly becoming important in CNPC's overseas profile.
Two months ago, CNPC signed a deal with Venezuelan state oil company PDVSA
to form a joint venture to develop the Junin 4 Block in Venezuela's Orinoco
heavy oil region.
In the deal, CNPC will have a 40% stake. PDVSA and CNPC plan to produce
about 20 million tons of oil per annum from the block.
The companies have also signed a deal to jointly build a refinery in China
to process heavy crude from the Orinoco field as part of Venezuelan
President Hugo Chavez's plans to boost exports.
PDVSA has also signed a memorandum of understanding with a Chinese shipyard
to build large crude carriers to move the fuel to China.
Venezuela said earlier that it will boost oil supplies to China to 1 million
bpd by 2012, up from the 500,000 bpd expected in 2010. The current volume is
250,000 bpd.

TOTAL PREPARES FOR OIL EXPLORATION

Total preparing for Sudan exploration operations
Date: 14/07/2008

Total revealed yesterday that it is preparing to commence a new exploration
effort in southern Sudan almost 30 years since it concluded the licensing
agreement.

Jean Francois Lassalle, vice president at Total for public affairs, said the
company is in the initial stages of exploration, which was halted more than
20 years ago by the Sudanese civil war. He said prospective acreage has been
identified in the area near Bor, capital of Jonglei, and that participants
have been determined for a new consortium for the exploration and production
effort.

Lassalle said Total is still waiting for drilling equipment to arrive at its
base camp in Juba, but that the anticipation is that exploratory drilling
will commence before yearend. "We're going to hunt for elephants in Sudan,
not for mosquitoes," he said.

Despite rocketing prices, outlook is bleak for oil majors

Despite record crude prices, the major oil companies are struggling to
access resources that are being jealously guarded by national companies with
whom they are forced to establish partnerships.As paradoxical as it may seem, high oil prices do not mean a golden age for the likes of ExxonMobil, Chevron, Total or BP. Of course, with a barrel of oil at more than 140 dollars, they are seeing major profits, but the future has never seemed so uncertain.The problem is access to reserves. The oil majors now control less than 10 percent of world resources of gas and oil, against 70 percent in the 1970s, according to figures released by the office of Ernst and Young at the World Petroleum Congress in Madrid. As a result they are being forced to explore in increasingly extreme conditions."Oil in deep water or in regions that are difficult to access (such the Arctic) are what are left for international companies," said Christophe de Margerie, the head of French group Total. The majors are also competing with the national oil companies, which are not content to just enjoy direct access to the resources of their respective countries but are making inroads elsewhere. "National hydrocarbon companies are no longer confined to within their borders," OPEC president Chekib Khelil said, citing the examples of China's Sinoc and CNPC, Malaysia's Petronas or Algeria's Sonatrach. "A lot of international companies were previously national companies, such as BP and Total," said Khelil. "It's more and more difficult now to know which are national companies and which are majors because the majority of the nationals are becoming internationals," said Linda Cook, head of gas and electricity at Anglo-Dutch Shell. Even their superior technology is not enough, as national oil companies can can appeal to service firms such as Schlumberger or Technip. Of course, some like Saudi Aramco, have no problems in that respect. The Saudi company is developing "nanorobots" with a diameter of less than the size of a human hair to look for deep resources in rocks. But the majors still hold some aces, such as their expertise in more
ambitious projects or their financial bases. "The increasingly massive size of oil and gas projects and their complexity ensure that oil companies continue to play a key role," as they have the
advantage over service industries of being the sole representative throughout the project, Ernst and Young said. "In most of the cases, we (Shell) will continue establishing alliances with state companies, in their and our countries, specially with gas, which needs big investments," said Linda Cook. But the majors can longer appear to be preying on the countries where they are operating. "We can do a lot of things more than our regular work, such as education and training," said de Margerie. "It is essential for Total to go beyond its traditional role."

During morning of 4th July, 08, strong wind blows from South towards North direction and carry along dust particles from nearby bare land or desert. The dust suspends in the air for many hours before the easterly wind bring it to inland in late afternoon. Bad air quality and visibility do not deter my friends from fishing. Their hair turns into brown color. The dust blocks the sunlight and heat and make the day a little pleasant but humid. Alhamdulillah, we are blessed with some small fishes and receive several large fishes from the Dina Star chief officer too. Later in the evening, we cook sweat and sour and soy sauce fish for dinner. It is not easy to live by our home standard in this part of the world!!!

Qualities of Exemplary Leaders

"Owing to Mercy from God, you were gentle in dealing with them [your companions]. Were you harsh [and crude], hard of heart; they would have fled from you. Therefore, pardon their abuses, seek [God's] forgiveness for them, and consult them in the affair. Once you have resolved on a course of action [be decisive] and trust in God. Surely, God loves those who trust in Him." Qur'an 3:159

This verse contains a wealth of instruction to guide those who are leaders, and as Muslims we should all be leaders. The Prophet mentioned, "All of you are shepherds, and each of you will be asked concerning his flock."[1] Let us examine some of the implications of the verse relevant to leadership.

Owing to Mercy from God... God is reminding His prophet, peace upon him, that the mercy he displays, in fact all of the virtues or favors that he enjoys are all from God. This is a critical point for any leader to realize, because of the propensity of those in positions of leadership to assume that they are in those positions because of something they have done. While it is certainly true that in many instances, hard work and perseverance have assisted a particular individual in his or her rise to the top, even the possession of those qualities is due to God.

Acknowledging this at the very beginning of our affair is one of the keys to real power as it helps to render us humble, and humility before people unlock for that person the power of God. The Prophet Muhammad, peace upon him, mentioned in that regard, "No one humbles themselves for the sake of God except that God elevates him."[2]

Those who doubt the efficacy of such an approach-forgetting this was the way of our Prophet Muhammad, peace and mercy of God upon him-should consider the insights offered by Jim Collins in his book, Good to Great. He mentions what he calls Type 5 Leaders. They are those exceptional leaders who lead companies in their transition from being good to great. [3] They combine personal humility, which is essential for gentleness in one's dealings, with intense will. This unique combination of virtues is the essence of the message this verse is presenting to us, as we shall see.

Recognizing that everything comes from God is also one of the keys to gaining an increase in good things, for we can not give thanks for a blessing we do not recognize. In recognizing God for blessing us with the qualities that may have helped us to become capable leaders, we are able to thank Him for those blessings. Hence, we are subject to a rule He has established to govern our etiquettes in responding to a blessing, If you give thanks [for my blessings] I will increase you in them... (14:7)

Recognizing that everything comes from God also helps us to realize our limitations. We come to understand that we must work hard to accomplish our goals. However, at the end of the day, we do not control the outcomes of our strivings. As soon as we can accept that fact we instantly gain peace of mind, for we do not endeavor to burden ourselves with things beyond our control. Furthermore, when in positions of leadership, we are less likely to look for oftentimes innocent parties to blame for failures that occur. This helps to create a healthier and more productive work environment for everyone.

...you were gentle in dealing with them [your companions]. "Gentleness does not exist in anything except that it beautifies it, and it is not removed from anything except that it defiles it."[4] In many instances when we are in a leadership position we try to impose our authority on others. In some instances this only engenders stubborn rebellion and opposition. In others it brings about grudging compliance. Neither situation is healthy. Gentleness, on the other hand encourages willing compliance.

Were you harsh [and crude], hard of heart; they would have fled from you. Here God is telling His prophet, peace upon him, that despite your charisma, your concern for the believers and all of your other positive characteristics, were you harsh and hard-hearted, your companions would have left you. Therefore, you must avoid those characteristics. This is a lesson for us in terms of how we should approach leadership and positions of authority.

People who are harsh in their leadership styles oftentimes demand respect. They should be mindful of the fact that respect that is demanded is seldom lasting, and it is never sincere. People who are gentle in the appropriate situations, compassionate, empathetic and magnanimous command respect. Respect that is commanded is sincere and lasting.

Leaders who are fair and gentle attract talented individuals, while those that are harsh are usually intimidated and threatened by talented people and generally repulse them. Their insecurity is sensed by talented people who are secure within themselves. This leads to them shying away from harsh individuals. This in turn leads to a corrupt or incompetent inner circle developing around leaders who demand respect through harsh treatment and crude mannerisms. The Prophet Muhammad, peace upon him, mentioned that when God desires good for a leader He gives him a good circle of advisers. The opposite is also true. [5]

In the long run, magnanimity will always trump tyranny. Tyranny may achieve temporary victories, but the fruit of those victories is bitter and the season of its harvest is very short. This is true in interpersonal relations as well as in relations between nations. We have to strive to be people who at every level are committed to being open-hearted and magnanimous in our character.

Therefore, pardon their abuses... We should be quick to pardon others, where our rights are involved, or where the transgressions we observe arise from ignorance. One of the greatest lessons we enforce upon ourselves when we are quick to pardon is that perfection is God's alone. Recognizing that, we do not expect perfection from ourselves, nor do we expect it from others. We do strive for perfection and constant improvement. However, we realize that perfection is simply not our lot in life. When our parents, spouses, children, employees, coworkers, and others understand that they have room for error in their dealing with us they are more relaxed and therefore less likely to err. This is a simple yet unappreciated truth.

Also, we have to understand that when we are merciful and forgiving, we invite God's mercy and forgiveness into our life. God mentions in the Qur'an, O believers! Verily, among your spouses and children are those that are enemies unto you. If you pardon them, overlook their faults and seek forgiveness for them; then you should know that God is Oft Forgiving and Most Merciful [to you]. (64:14)

Our Prophet reminded us, "The merciful people are those God will show mercy to..."[6] This tradition involves a promise and a principle. It is especially relevant for leaders, for those leaders who show no mercy, will be shown no mercy-neither by God, nor by those they oppress if they ever gain the upper hand over them. One rare exception is the mercy our Prophet Muhammad, peace upon him, showed to the members of his tribe, Quraysh, once he was given authority over them.

Seek God's forgiveness for them... When we seek God's forgiveness for someone we are acknowledging that there is only so much we can do for them. After that we are implicitly saying that we are deputing their affair to God, who can do so much more for them. We are also letting them know that we are concerned for their ultimate wellbeing and salvation.

When this message is conveyed to our subordinates we will find them most happy and committed, ready to serve, for they understand that we do not just see them as an asset to be exploited, rather we see them as a servant of God who we can help along on the road to salvation.

And consult them in the affair. Mutual consultation is one of the pillars of social relations in Islam. As the saying goes, "Two heads are better than one." The more people we can involve in a project or decision, the more thorough our approach to that project or decision will be. Islam has high respect for the idea of due diligence in public decision-making methodology. We should deliberate and consult before making what will sometimes be far-reaching decisions. One of the reasons for our contemporary weakness is that we have gotten away from this idea.

Here the Prophet, peace upon him, who is divinely guided in religious affairs, in the broadest sense of religion, is encouraged to consult his companions because he is laying the foundation for effective rule and leadership to guide those succeeding him. However, we will only be the beneficiaries of the wisdom he bequeathed to us if we implement those teachings in our lives. This area of endeavor is no exception.

We should also understand that a team will always accomplish more than a single individual. These instructions will help us to build strong teams. We should also understand that "good" can always be "better." One of the first things mentioned by Abu Bakr, may God be pleased with him, upon assuming the Caliphate, was, "If I do well help me to do better." Abu Bakr, may God be pleased with him, was sending out two messages. The first was that I can always do better but only with your help. The second was an invitation to get involved. Good leadership does not wait for involvement to happen, it actively encourages it.

Once you have resolved on a course of action [be decisive]... Once a course of action has been chosen it must be accompanied by decisiveness. Great leaders are decisive, after due diligence has been exercised. The greatest of all leaders, the five great prophets, Noah, Abraham, Moses, Jesus and Muhammad are described as Ulul ÔAzm the possessors of decisive resolve. No one will follow an indecisive leader. Decisiveness is a function of will. This is the second quality mentioned by Collins in, Good to Great.

In confronting the challenges before us as Muslims in this country we should understand that resolve is one of the qualities we will need to have. God mentions in the Qur'an, You will surely be tested in your wealth and your lives and you will hear from those given the scripture before you and from the idolaters much abuse. If you patiently persevere and remain mindful of God, [you should know] that is a manifestation of resolve. (3:186)

As we listen to the defamation of our religion and the slander of our Prophet, peace upon him, we should not allow that to dishearten us or turn us away from the good works we are doing. We should persevere, we should forge on, and we should realize that we are not violating any laws nor transgressing against any of the principles upon which this nation was founded-even thought the nation itself oftentimes does not honor those principles.

And trust in God... God never disappoints. When we trust in Him, we will never be disappointed. People will eventually disappoint us, in real or perceived ways. Although those disappointments usually do not result in any permanent damage to our relationships they can be frustrating. When we place our trust in God we remove this great cause of our frustrations.

When we trust in God, we also are less demanding of people. This is one of the ways to encourage others to do more for us in a spirit of willful volunteerism. What is given voluntarily is given sincerely. Sincerity is a quality that helps bring blessings to our actions. Ultimately, the value of our actions is associated to the blessings they contain, and not their abundance.

God loves those who trust in Him. If God is for us no one can be against us. As leaders we want God on our side. This is one of the keys in moving from good to great, for when we ally ourselves with God we ally ourselves with the source of all strength and power. Trusting in God is just one of the things we can do to invite His love. He mentions in the Qur'an, Verily, God loves those who do good. (2:195) Surely, God loves those who turn to Him in repentance. (2:222) ...and God loves those who purify themselves. (2:222) God loves those conscious of him. (3:76) God loves those who manifest excellence in their faith. (3:134) God love those who are patient. (3:146) Verily, God loves those who rely on him. (3:159) God loves those who are just. (5:42)

Hence, trusting in God, being good and excellent in all of our affairs for His sake, turning to him in repentance, being conscious of Him, purifying ourselves, patiently persevering and being just, these are all qualities and actions that invite God's love into our lives.

When we are beloved to God then, as He mentions in a sacred tradition (hadith qudsi), "I become the hearing with which he hears, the sight with which he sees, the hand with which he grasps and the feet that convey him. [In this state] if he were to ask anything of Me, I would grant it. And were he to seek my protection, I would protect him."[7] This does not mean that God becomes a part of us. However, it does mean that He will bless us to use all of our faculties in ways that are pleasing to Him.

Sudan is targeting an increase of 100,000 barrels of oil a day mid-2009 as the result of new investments, particularly Chinese, come on stream, the Sudan oil minister has said.

In an interview this week with Dow Jones Newswires, Zubair Ahmed al-Hassan said the African country plans a daily output of 600,000 barrels mid-2009, compared with 500,000 now.

The country holds one of Africa's largest proven oil reserves at 6.4 billion barrels but growth in output has been hindered by a civil war in the South that formally ended in 2005.

The minister said the projects that will fuel this output hike will include a ramp up of Block 6 in the South West of the country. He said the operator, China national Petroleum Corp., or CNPC, intends to increase production from 40,000 barrels a day to 60,000 this year.

The recent discovery of light oil on this block should help production rise on this block, he added.

He said exploration on Red Sea blocks 13 and 15, in which CNPC is also a shareholder, offered the possibility of production development. "Signs of gas" have been detected in these blocks, which could be used for electricity generation and, as a second option, for industries or liquefied-natural-gas exports, he said.

Among other prospects for oil output growth, South Africa's national oil company PetroSA started seismic work earlier this year in Block 14, a Northern block bordering Egypt and Libya, he said.

Al-Hassan also said Sudan is mulling joining the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative, a program that aims at improving resources revenue transparency by governments and companies.

"We are considering it," he said, adding that the 2005 peace agreement between North and South Sudan already stipulates extensive disclosures.

We make an effort to get Allah vast provision underwater of Red Sea. That evening of 28th April, Zul prepares steam fish and we cook other supplimentary dishes. We went for a fishing trip on the 28th April, 2008 because it was a public holiday. One of the catches was a one meter long eel. This type of sea el normally served onboard the Emirate Airlines for business class passenger. I believe most of us have eaten it before. Looking at the eel, I dare not to cut it nor cook it.....

We were invited to attend a wedding celebration at one of our Sudanese friends house on the evening of April 21, 2008. It was a wonderful experience for all of us because we never been to any such wedding celebration before. To fulfill our host request, we joined the traditional dance. Our good friend Zul Inar was so excited with the rhythm of the music and be the first among us to join the dance. I have seen his legs started to shake liked a rattle snake an hour earlier. This is the cleanness shop in the city and on par with other ice-cream shop around the world. Very nice interior design with mirror on the ceiling and wall to make it look larger that the actual size. It is owned by a Sudanese who has lived long years in Holland. I don't have any share in the business!!!

THE BRILLIANT DONKEY

Picture worth thousand words or accusations. By first glance, you may think that the man with the iron rod had inhumanly abused the donkey. In actual fact, he is an animal lover.

I woke up one morning (few days ago) and found the water tap had dried out. After the fajar prayer, I found traces of water on the ground originated from Raj cabin and a donkey lied under his cabin. I woke up Tuan Daing to unlock Raj room (assuming his room was flooded with water) and to close the main water supply valve. Then we realized that the donkey had hit the main water pipe under the cabin causing water to gush out and consequently drained several water tanks. Luckily there were two other spare water tanks full with water.

Daing tried to save the donkey by pulling her two ears. With the help of a Sudanese engineer, both able to pull the donkey away from the cabin and allowed her to stand up right. There was another donkey few meters away waiting for her. Daing had the impression that both donkey were expressing their natural desires but one slip under the cabin. Other people said, donkey can be considered as a brilliant animal. She was desperately looking for water, after failing to satisfy her desire for water, she purposely hit the water pipe. Unfortunately, the amount of water was too much causing the soil to soak and wet. She had sunk into the mud and slip under the cabin. That's all about the "mat sentul" story.

LARGE STINGRAY

"Bapak Ghana" from Central Java gave us this large stingray on the first week of March, 08. The width was approximately 1 m and the thickness at the centre was 100 mm. The fish was caught approximately 2km away from the beach. We have not finished the meat. Too much for 3-4 of us.

Abu Huraira (Radhialliaho anho) reported Allah's messenger saw as saying,
"The believers who show the most perfect faith are those who have the best disposition and the best of you are those who are best to their wives " (At-Tirmidhi)

A Wife (A talk by Shaykh Abdullah Adhami)

By getting married you are not just getting a wife, you are getting your whole world. From now until the rest of your days your wife will be your partner, your companion, and your best friend.

She will share your moments, your days, and your years. She will share your joys and sorrows, your successes and failures, your dreams and your fears. When you are ill, she will take the best care of you; when you need help, she will do all she can for you;

When you have a secret, she will keep it; when you need advice, she will give you the best advice. She will always be with you: when you wake up in the morning the first thing your eyes will see will be hers; during the day, she will be with you, if for a moment she is not with you by her physical body, she will be thinking of you, praying for you with all her heart, mind, and soul; when you go to sleep at night, the last thing your eyes will see will be her; and when you are asleep you will still see her in your dreams. In short, she will be your whole world and you will be her whole world.

The best description that I personally have ever read describing the closeness of the spouses to each other is the Qur'anic verse which says: "They are your garments and you are their garments" (Surah Al Baqarah 2:187). Indeed, spouses are like garments to each other because they provide one another with the protection, the comfort, the cover, the support, and the adornment that garments provide to humans. Just imagine a journey in the winter of Alaska without garments! Our spouses provide us with the same level of comfort, protection, cover, and support in the journey of our lives on this earth as garments would do in the Alaskan journey.

The relationship between the spouses is the most amazing of all human relations: the amount of love and affection, intimacy and closeness, mercy and compassion, peace and tranquility that fills the hearts of the spouses is simply inexplicable. The only rational explanation for these most amazing of all human feelings is that: it is an act of Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala, "And Allah has made for you Mates (and Companions) of your own nature..." (Surah An Nahl 16:72)

Only our Almighty Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala in His Infinite Power, Boundless Mercy, and Great Wisdom can create and ingrain these amazing and blessed feelings in the hearts of the spouses. In fact Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala is reminding those who search for His signs in the universe that these feelings in the hearts of the spouses are among the signs that should guide humans to His existence as He says in the Qur'an, "And among His signs is this, that He created for you mates from among yourselves that you may dwell in tranquility with them and He has put love and mercy between your hearts: verily in that are signs for those who reflect." (Surah Ar Rum 30:21).

But Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala knows that the human heart is not a static entity, it is sometimes weak and at times dynamic. Feelings can and do change with time. Love may wither and fade away. The marital bond might weaken if not properly cared for. Happiness in marriage cannot be taken for granted; continuous happiness requires constant giving from both sides. For the tree of marital love to remain alive and keep growing, the soil has to be sustained, maintained, watered and nurtured.

Remember that our Prophet Muhammad Salallaahu 'alaihi wa'sallaam had found the time to go out to the desert and race with his wife Aisha. She out ran him but later after she had gained some weight, he out ran her.

Remember that the Prophet Salallaahu 'aliahi wa'sallaam took his wife to watch the young Ethiopians playing and dancing their folk dances. The show of emotions is necessary to keep the marital bond away from rusting and disintegrating.

Remember that you will be rewarded by Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala for any emotions you show to your wife as the Prophet Salallaahu 'alaihi wa'sallaam said "one would be rewarded for anything that he does seeking the pleasure of Allah even the food that he puts in the mouth of his wife."

Never underestimate the importance of seemingly little things as putting food in your wife's mouth, opening the car's door for her, etc. Remember that the Prophet Salallaahu 'alaihi wa'sallaam used to extend his knee to his wife to assist her up to ride the camel.

Try to always find some time for both of you to pray together. Strengthening the bond between you and Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala is the best guarantee that your own marital bond would always remain strong. Having peace with Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala will always result in having more peace at home.

Remember that the Prophet Salallaahu 'alaihi wa'sallaam gave glad tidings for those couples who wake up at night to pray together. The Prophet Salallaahu 'alaihi wa'sallaam even urged the spouse who rises up first to wake the other spouse up even by throwing cold water on his/her face.

Always try your best to be good to your wife by words and by deeds. Talk to her, smile to her, seek her advice, ask for her opinion, spend quality time with her and always remember that the Prophet Salallaahu 'alaihi wa'sallaam said "the best of you are those who are best to their wives."

Finally, it is common that spouses vow to love and honor their spouses until death do them part. I do believe that this vow is good or even great, but not enough! It is not enough that you love your wife. You have to love what she loves as well. Her family, her loved ones must also become your loved ones. Don't be like my colleague who was unhappy about his wife's parents coming to visit for few weeks. He candidly said to her "I don't like your parents."
Naturally, she angrily looked at him straight in the eye and said " I don't like yours either"... Also, it is not enough that you love her until death do you part. Love should never end and we do believe there is life after death where those who did righteousness in this world will be joined by their spouses (Surah Al Zukhruf 43:70) and off springs.

The best example in this regard is the Prophet Salallaahu 'alaihi wa'sallaam whose love for Khadija, his wife of 25 years extended to include all those she loved and continued even after her death. It was many years after her death and he never forgot her and whenever a goat was slaughtered in his house he would send portions of it to Khadija's family and friends and whenever he felt that the visitor at the door might be Khadija's sister Hala, he would pray saying "O Allah let it be Hala."

FISHING TRIP

Late evening of 3rd January, 08, me, Harmadi and Zack paid a visit to old friends at the offshore barges. They have been continuously inviting us to visit them since the past 6 months (since completion of offshore works). The weather and sea state didn't seemed very gentle to us but we went through as not to let down our friends invitation. Riding on Sole Ann was not smooth (feel like riding "kuda naik minyak") and Alhamdulillah we made it to the barges. It was a dream come true for Zack because it was his first trip to offshore.

The barge crews were very happy to see visitors after such a long time living on the barge without doing anything except maintaining the barges and fishing. We were served with delicious fish biryani during dinner and later went for fishing. It wasn't a lucky night and we didn't catch any fish. The next morning, after "fajar prayer", the fishing activity continued. We were served with large capati by the host during breakfast. Weather and sea state became worst after noon hours and I was worried that I couldn't reach the shore to catch up with the flight on the 5th Jan,08. Muzaffar (the chief) informed me that he couldn't send me back to shore because Sole Ann was not safe to sail through the rough sea state (2-3m of wave height) while the large tug "Dina Star" was having hydraulic problem at the engine.

Muralli, the electrical engineer on the barge had a deep cut in his right hand finger while retrieving frozen fish heads from the refrigerator. The fish heads were meant for us. It was very unfortunate day for him but we did appreciate his sincerity in preparing the fish heads for us to bring back to shore. I was not very comfortable to stay another night at the barges because the weather was getting worst and I had not packed my bag to travel back home.

Due to the seriousness of the cut on Muralli's finger, we decided to hurry the Dina Star crews to fix the hydraulic problem and sent Muralli to the shore clinic for treatment. At last, Alhamdulillah, the problem was fixed at 9 pm and we sailed to the GNPOC jetty safely. While waiting for the engine hydraulic system to be fixed, Zack had a large "Jenahak". The fish weighted approximately 5-6 kilogramme. With Allah mercy on us, the long wait on board the tug Dina Star was paid off and we didn't go back to shore with empty hand. It was a wonderful experience for the three of us. Muralli had several stitches and I was informed that he had recovered well.

After spending my R&R back home and returned to site, to my surprise, those friends and barges are still at the same location!!! This part of the world does not change much......

HAMMERHEAD KING

On the 17th February, 2008, Harmadi fished an endangered hammerhead shark at the MT beach. The fish weighted approximately 12 kg. The remaining five OGP personnel at site took 4 to 5 days to consumed the whole fish. After arriving at site on 19th February, I had the opportunity to taste the "asam pedas hammerhead" cooked by Harun (Sudanese chef) and "hammerhead noodle soup" specially prepared by Chef Harmadi. The meat is very soft. The shark fin "sudah langsai"!!!

Congratulation to Harmadi!!!! You are the best fisherman at site this far and you are entitle to be called "Hammerhead King". Don't forget to bring good quality fishing rod when you come back to site. "Selamat mengundi".

NEW YEAR EVE AT PORT SUDAN

For the past two years, I didn't have the opportunity nor strong desire to witness Sudan Independence Day and New Year celebrations at Port Sudan. Yesterday, I made a commitment to see with my own eyes the much talk about yearly event in front of the Hilton Hotel.

The fishermen took a time off from night fishing and we left the resort at 10pm. Upon reaching the city center, we observed that the main road facing the port was closed to traffic and city dwellers occupying the full width of the road and sidewalks. It was estimated no less than fifty thousand city folks came out from their homes with new and bright color, traditional and modern dresses. They seemed to enjoy the night and looking forward for holiday on the 1st January, 2008.

Approximately 2km of the main road was packed with city dwellers from all walk of life. We were facing difficulty to walk through the crowd but to bare with the once in a life time experience. We did observe minimal business activity with non-existence of free entertainment using tax payers money. There were few private parties and entertainment conducted by clubs like SPC (Sudan Port Corporation) and International Club. The large crowd consisted mainly families that sat/lying along the sidewalks and sea front (like Danai Bay), eating and watching the passers by. I had a believe that the main reason they were at the location because of showing gratitude to the country independence while enjoying the cool night. The crowd started dispersing before midnight and we didn't observe fireworks, nor hearing any artillery shot or car hon immediately we entered the year 2008.

We left the city 10 minutes passed the midnight and the traffic flow was smooth.

EXPLORING PORT SUDAN ECONOMIC ACTIVITIES

After 5 pm yesterday evening, we went to explore the prawn and salt industries immediately South of Bashayer 2 Marine Resort as part of our last expedition of year 2007. Unfortunately, the prawn farm was closed for visitor after 3 pm and therefore we were unable to get into the farm. We went to the salt farm next to the prawn farm and looked at the salt production. To our amazement, the type of salt produced at the location very much different from the cooking salt. We observed the color was slightly pink and the size of the texture was extraordinaryly large. We will further study the salt, the production and purpose. For the time being, we let you enjoy viewing the photos taken at the site.

UNCOVER THE NIGHT AT BASHAYER 2

Currently, myself, Harmadi and Zulkifli (Zack) are the only Malaysians living at Bashayer 2 Marine Resort. Six are still in Malaysia enjoying their R&R while two have been assigned to other project. We are fulfilling the commitment to wait the "homecoming" of CON... Non of the CON personnel is stationed at the resort since October this year.

Living in isolation from the busy worldly life and taking advantage of the circumstances, we are devoting our self to glorify the only Creator and attempting to reach closer to Him. Nevertheless, there are long hours that has to be filled up with activities that promote healthy living. The physical well being as well as the pyschcological need to be nourished to avoid breakdown of any one.

Last night, as usual, fishing continues. After fishing, we went to the kitchen and prepared fish fillets from the fresh catch. Mee banding Muar was added to the menu. The night was ended with karaoke session by Zack and Harmadi. Sad songs from Sudirman were their favourite.

BREAKING NEWS - NEW RECORD

This is to certify that both Tuan Harmadi and Tuan Zack had fished 17 fishes last night. Meaning to say, their average catch is 8.5 per person. This is a new record that supersedes the earlier fishing record (20th Dec, 2007) with an average of 7 fishes per person. Congratulation to both of them. "Jangan jealous!!!!" Judge decision is final.

The catch consists of mix fishes including "jenahak" and "GT". Today, we cooked "asam pedas jenahak and GT" for lunch. Whump......"manisnya ikan segar"!!!! We are looking forward for another extraordinary record tonight, InsyaAllah.

Tuan Harmadi landed at Port Sudan yesterday evening after leaving the resort for R&R three weeks ago. Later at night, pairing with another professional, Tuan Zack, he made his trip to the same spot that the tour group from Khartoum made the largest catch of fish. Both of them were determined to break the record of 28 fishes fished in one night trip. They have experienced fishing line snapping off several times after large fishes escaped with the baits. I heard that they were planning to buy high strength fishing line (80 lb holding capacity) soon. They ended their night with 8 fishes only but that didn't slow down their enthusiasm to be the best among the best fishermen at Red Sea Coast.

We met three Sudanese whom started to join the fishing club. One of them had bought a fishing rod but unable to install the fishing line. Harmadi will provide free consultancy service to them on Saturday evening.

On the way back to Bashayer 2 Marine Resort after visited Al Kawit, the tour group stopped at Suakin Fish Market (Sound like Manhattan Fish Market!) to buy some fishes for friends living at Khartoum and PS 5. Unfortunately, due to Eid Adha celebration, there was no supply of fishes to the market. The group drove back to the resort with frustration and empty hand. With Allah mercy, they went to the Bashayer 2 beach for fishing and photo session immediately after arrival. During the brief visit before sunset, Jaha fished the largest pari this far. We had an enjoyable dinner with asam pedas pari that very evening.

After dinner, the tour group returned to the beach. Late night, with Allah mercy on them again (after failed to buy fish at the market), they fished 28 medium size fishes. That's also a new record at the resort.

Jaha is currently holding the largest pari ever fished at the resort. I am waiting for the local professional (Tuan Harmadi) to come back from R&R on the 28th Dec, 07 and see whether he can break the new record.

At approximately 9 am on 25th Dec, 2007, I received a phone call from a driver stating that four unidentified OGP personnel were in the camp. I was caught by surprise because nobody made any booking at the Bashayer 2 Resort since 21 Dec. I drove back to the resort and found the guys (Tuan Sabri and the gang) from PS 5 already in their respective room. It was a blessing because we had some business to do and kept us busy.

They made their own trip to Port of Sudan after brief breakfast of mee hoon goreng. They told me that they were inspired by earlier visitors that the city of Port Sudan offering excitement (old building like the "collesium" and they can drink coffee a few inches from ships at the port) and the night life has always been fascinating. Deep in my heart, the exaggerating tourism promotion by the previous tour group really convinced them. With the intention to verify the claims, they made a daring trip leaving PS 5 at 2:30 am on the same day. After the day trip around Port Sudan, they fall in love with the city and started comparing with PS 5 that can only offers dessert safari lifestyle. At night, I drove them to the "Pantai Lido" or "Bintang Walk" and drank "Jabana" while enjoying the night life and cool breeze. Later, we drove back to the resort and enjoyed "Mee Bandung Muar" and "Ikan Bakar" at the "takraw court" under the moonlight. We ate and talked until 1:30 am before everybody went to bed.

They checked out from the resort early morning of 26th Dec, 07 to PS 5 and stopped at Al Kawit for sight seeing. I hope they really enjoyed the brief trip and see us at Year 2008 Visit Port Sudan Tourism Promotion.
